Overlooked local treasures – the wilderness in Hyde Park

Hyde Park is itself a much loved and well known treasure, whether you are a local jogger or cyclist, tourist, horse rider (either for lessons or work) or park afficianado. But what is not as well known by the multitudes is the large swathes in the centre of the park that are left to grow free.

We were walking through this part of the park on Friday and I was amazed to find such a lovely meadow in the middle of a major metropolis: grass that came up to my shoulder, and a quiet that meant the only real sound was our footsteps and the buzz of crickets. This deliberate policy on the part of the park management to encourage new species is a success, and a beautiful one at that.

So if you are spending time in London, by all means visit the famous parts of Hyde Park such as Speakers Corner and the Lido. But also make time to wander through what has to be one of the most beautiful meadows in the middle of a city, and let your heart soar just a little.
